Glow effect - Photoshop Tutorials

In this tutorial we will turn a normal deer into glowing horns with Photoshop.

- Open image file (File/Open)

- Select the Selection Tool.

- After selecting the deer click on Select and Mask.

- In the Properties window, select Onion Skin at View and increase Transparency.


- Select Refine Edge Brush Tool (R) and Refine Edge.

- In the Properties window, tick in Decontaminate Colors and Output To select New Layer with Layer Mask. Click OK.

- Ctrl + click on Mark layer to select Deer.

- Cut out the horns then select Deer image and Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer. We have Layer 1

- Ctrl + G for group Layer 1.

- Select the Background layer and click "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon and choose Color Lookup.

- In the Properties window, 3DLUT File select Moonlight.3DL.

- Click "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon and choose Black & White. Reduce Opacity to 50%.

- On Layer 1: right-click / Convert to Smart Object and Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer.

- Change Blending mode to Linear Dodge (Add).

- Go to Filter / Blur / Gaussian Blur. Set radius 5 pixels. Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer.

- Double-click on Gaussian Blur smart filter. Set radius 100 pixels. 

- Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer. Double-click on Gaussian Blur smart filter. Set radius 250 pixels.

- Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer. Double-click on Gaussian Blur smart filter. Set radius 500 pixels.

- Click "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon and choose Hue/Saturation.

- Click this icon:

Click on Colorize. Adjust Hue and Saturation.
- Select this layer and set Curves.

- Click this icon:

Click and adjust in line (green arrow).
- Select Mask, select Brush tool (B), Soft Round. Opacity 100 and Flow 30

Make sure foreground is black.

Paint on the body of the deer.

- Select Hue/Saturation layer. Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer. Drag this layer into Group 1. Select this icon.

Select Mark in layer and invert the Mask (Ctrl + i).

Make sure foreground is white. Paint on the back and head of the deer.

- Drag and drop Sky with stars into Photoshop. Set blending mode is Screen. Transform it. Click Add layer mask, and invert the Mask (Ctrl + i). Use the Brush tool to paint on the horn.

- Click "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon and choose Levels. Click this icon:

Adjust Levels.

- Click "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon and choose Color Lookup. In the Properties window, 3DLUT File select Crisp_Warm.look then decrease Opacity.
